Great Glen 1st XI 77 All Out - Dunton Bassett 1st XI 80-1 - Dunton Bassett win by 9 Wickets
The Colesseum. Madison Square Garden. Wembley Stadium. Right off Lutterworth Road just outside of Dunton Bassett (heading away from Blaby). All scenes of gladiatorial sporting contents that echo through the ages.
The latter has been the venue for numerous contents between the titans of Great Glen and Dunton Bassett Cricket Clubs, where the wrestling - sometimes figurative, sometimes literal - between the two sides has produced some fantastic spectacles in recent years. With Glen having started the season strongly last week at home, and Dunton Bassett seeking to right the wrongs of a heavy defeat, the picturesque setting promised more of the same on Saturday. Unfortunately, the contest's 2023 edition failed to live up to the drama and excitement recorded in the history books.
With more rain over the course of the week, the toss remained all important and after the shock of a win last week, normal service was resumed as Chris called incorrectly and Dunton Bassett understandably chose to bowl. A new spin on catfishing was employed by Dunton, who produced a wicket that looked fabulous but played similarly to many others across the county and country. Low and slow was the order of the day and the soft, soggy outfield meant even the best timed shots offered little value.
Ravi and Pras opened, and Pras wasn't in the mood to hang around. An expansive drive to the first ball of the innings that failed to connect was followed up with more of the same a couple of balls later. Unfortunately, Pras connected at the second attempt, chipping up to the man at Mid Off. Pravin came out to join Ravi and the numbers one and three built conservatively, with watchful shots that treated some tight early bowling with due respect. Pravin was the next to fall, another good ball that beat his defences, whilst Ravi accumulated runs through a number of increasingly well-timed punches straight back past the bowler.
Avi replaced Pravin and demonstrated the high front-elbowed forward defensive technique that cricket coaches have special dreams about. Glen continued to score slowly and with the bowlers well and truly on top, you got the sense that another wicket was around the corner. A bowling change brought that wicket, as Dunton turned to a bowler whose style and stature evoked the West Indies hero Rakheem Cornwall in his pomp. Ravi snicked behind and creditably walked for an 18 that would be worth many more in the height of summer, bringing Milan to the crease.
With Glen now 3 down for not many, the batsmen collectively decided that attack was the best form of defence. That attack would take the form of elaborate drives over Long-On, a Glen-esque interpretation of Bazball that should probably be admired for it's intent more than it's execution. Both Avi and Milan fell bowled attempting the shot in quick succession, later to be matched by similar dismissals for Jignesh and Pinakin. Bowled whilst attempting to hit the cover off it was the favourite dismissal mode of the day.
In the middle of the tumble of wickets was Gaz, who fell LBW to the Dunton first change bowler from the Field End, who would go on to take a Michelle*. Unorthodox is a word often used to describe Gaz and trying to middle the ball using his pad rather than bat only cemented the reputation of our incomparable 'Keeper. Though the batsmen thought he'd clearly hit it - as did some of the fielding side - I think we all trust umpire Pravin's judgement over Gaz's.
Some late defiance was offered by Chill Jr who, having accumulated more tattoos than Glen appearances in recent years, made a return to the fold and looked right at home. A few lovely drives saw him race to 14 before being bowled in similar fashion to many other Glen batters. All out for 78, with Chris left stranded on one not out, just 99 inevitable runs short of a ton....
Despite the low total, confidence in the Glen camp remained high that it could be defended on a tough track. Yet despite this confidence and a few tight early overs from Chris and Ash in particular, watchful batting and a couple of spurned chances to take catches meant Dunton Bassett knocked off the required runs with relative ease. The only bright spot a solitary wicket for Chris, bowling the opening batter with a delivery that swung back in from outside off to clip the top of leg stump. If nothing else, at least one Dunton Bassett day was ruined.
Dunton's 9 wicket win represented a relatively straightforward conclusion to what has been a spicy fixture in the recent past. Not the best day at the office for Glen, but equally not an indication of the season as a whole at such an early stage and with last week's win, the 1s remain comfortably mid-table. We'll have to save the wrestling for next week.
Player of the Match: Limited options to choose from this week, and the Glen travelling support deserves special mention here for outnumbering the Dunton Bassett fans 2 to 0. In the end though, POTM goes to Ravi for a dogged effort opening the innings and being the Glen batsman who actually outscored extras.
